To Live with the Fairy Folk is a guide to changing one's surroundings inside the house and in the garden to attract the elusive sprites seen frolicking and dancing in folklore of cultures as widely separated and diverse as Japan, Ireland, Spain, Denmark, and the Americas. There are as many theories about the origins and identities of Fairy Folk as there are people who believe in them. They are known variously as "the Good People, " "the Little People, " "the Good Neighbors, " "the Gentry, " and "the People of Peace." The Folk are made of memory, imagination, tradition, and desire. They exist wherever people are - they are ever present, like air. To Live with the Fairy Folk teaches the etiquette favored by the Folks. Respect for privacy, generosity, neatness, fairness, and romance are essential. Then there's the matter of where the Folk like to live - what trees to plant and how to best care for them, tips about lighting (inside and outside), and instructions for using water, shade, sunshine, and fragrances to make a Folk-friendly habitat. When the early Spanish and Mexican colonists came to settle Texas, they brought with them a rich culture which enabled them to settle and build a civilization in a wild land. The broad intracultural diversity of these settlers from different parts of Mexico and Spain are nowhere more evident in Texas than in the material culture--folk art, folk craft, architecture--which is part of our Spanish-Mexican legacy in Texas. Hecho en Tejas, the first book-length publication to focus on Texas-Mexican material culture, shows the richness of Tejano folk arts and crafts traditions through essays on Hispanic folk art in San Antonio in the home and yard, and on the street; through quilting traditions; through the vaqueros' traditions of weaving horsehair ropes and plaiting rawhide for quirts and bridles, and making of saddles; making of paper flowers as coronas para los muertos--primarily for decorating graves; making of ceramic figures for religious and secular use; the making of stringed instruments; the making of pinatas; religious folk art and yard art, grutas, roadside crosses, as well as religious matachines dance traditions; jacales as a form of folk house, and the built-environment of a Texas-Mexican ranch. The Woodcraft Folk - The Woodcraft Folk is a UK-based educational movement for children and young people, considered the youth arm of the co-operative movement. The aims of this youth organisation are to develop self-confidence and activity in society, with the intention of working towards "a world based on equality, peace, social justice and co-operation".
